Commercial AV System Redesign Case Study
Cleveland Heights Library – Multi-Room Control & 4K Video Distribution Upgrade
Xtend Technologies was engaged by the Cleveland Heights Library to redesign and replace its existing control system, video distribution infrastructure, and power management equipment across three presentation rooms.
Project Overview
This commercial project involved a full redesign of an outdated control and video distribution system across three presentation rooms.
The client had two primary objectives:
- Create simple, intuitive control for any user in all three rooms
- Make system reboots fast and easy in the event of hardware or software issues
The Business Challenge
The previous system created common commercial AV frustrations:
- Confusing room control
- Inconsistent video switching
- Difficult troubleshooting
- Equipment located above drop ceilings
- Reboots requiring technical intervention
The organization needed a solution that non-technical users could operate confidently — while IT staff maintained full system oversight.
Simple Control From Keypads
The redesigned system now delivers:
• 6-button engraved keypads in each room
• App-based control via Nice/ELAN Automation
• HDBaseT 4K video distribution
• Dedicated ScreenBeam wireless casting in every room
• Centralized 8×8 HDMI matrix switching
• Wall-mounted, serviceable equipment rack
• One-touch full or partial system reboots
The result is a commercial-grade AV infrastructure designed for long-term reliability.
Simplified User Control in Every Room
Each presentation room now includes a custom-engraved Nice/ELAN keypad allowing users to:
- Turn the projector or TVs on
- Select the correct video source
- Adjust volume
- Power the room off
Each keypad is programmed specifically for that room’s intended use case.
For advanced control, authorized users can access the system through the Nice/ELAN smart app via:
- Smartphone
- Tablet
- Desktop computer
This allows both local and remote control of the system when necessary.
Flexible 4K Video Distribution
At the core of the system is a commercial-grade 8×8 4K HDR HDMI matrix switcher.
This infrastructure allows:
- Any HDMI wall plate input to be viewed in any room
- Wireless casting from ScreenBeam devices
- Shared content across multiple rooms
- Flexible routing for special events
Each room includes:
• A non-proprietary HDMI wall plate input
• HDBaseT transmission up to 330 feet
• A dedicated ScreenBeam 1100 Plus wireless presentation system
This design supports laptops, hybrid meetings, guest presenters, and community events without technical complexity.
Wireless Presentation for Hybrid Collaboration
Each room includes a ScreenBeam 1100 Plus wireless presentation system enabling:
- App-free screen sharing
- Windows, Mac, and Chromebook compatibility
- Simultaneous multi-device sharing
- Secure guest access networks
- Hybrid meeting support
This ensures seamless collaboration for both internal teams and visitors.
Equipment Rack & Infrastructure Upgrade
All system components are now consolidated in a Strong 21U wall-mounted swing rack.
Key infrastructure includes:
• ELAN by Nice control system bundle
• 4K HDR 8×8 HDMI matrix switcher
• HDBaseT transmitters & receivers
• ScreenBeam wireless presentation systems
• WattBox IP-controlled power conditioning
• Structured cable management
No equipment is located above the drop ceiling.
All servicing can be performed from the rack.
Simple & Reliable Reboot Strategy
One of the most important improvements was simplifying system recovery.
If a communication issue ever occurs, the system can be rebooted in two ways:
- Physical power button located in the equipment rack
- Remote reboot via secure app access
Through the WattBox IP power conditioners, individual devices or the entire system can be rebooted instantly — locally or remotely.
This dramatically reduces downtime.
The Result
The client now benefits from:
- Simple 6-button room control
- Clean and intuitive user experience
- Reliable 4K video routing across all rooms
- Wireless casting in every room
- Centralized, accessible equipment
- Fast reboot capability
- Reduced IT support burden
The system is now scalable, serviceable, and designed for long-term commercial reliability.
